【１】私に、漫画「ドラえもん」の面白さを紹介してくれたのは、一九七三年生まれの長女だった。「ドラえもん」とともに育ったこの娘も、今年六月に結婚した。この夏、夫婦で初めて北海道の実家を訪れたときのお土産がシリーズの第四十五巻。【２】家族みんなで回し読みし、「ドラえもん」論に花を咲かせたばかりだった。それだけに作者の藤子（ふじこ）・Ｆ・不二雄氏が九月二十二日に死去したのは悼まれる。
　【３】「ドラえもん」は、「鉄腕アトム」や「鉄人２８号」に代表される、スーパーヒーロー型とは全く異なったタイプのロボットとして誕生した。読者の日常生活に密着して愛されるタイプのロボットなのである。【４】だが、「ドラえもん」がヒーローたり得るゆえんは、「四次元ポケット」にある。「タケコプター」「どこでもドアー」「インスタント旅行カメラ」「暗記パン」……。「ドラえもん」のポケットから出てくるこれら一つひとつのアイテム（道具）に限りない夢がある。【５】これが「ドラえもん」の人気の秘密であることはいまさら言うまでもない。
　しかし、「ドラえもん」には見逃してはならない、もう一つの重要な視点があるべきだと思うのだ。
　【６】――子供のみならず大人にまで夢を与えた――。本当にそうであろうか。私の知る限りでは「ドラえもん」の夢は一度もかなわなかった。【７】次から次へと「四次元ポケット」から出てくる奇想天外な科学の小道具は、困難を解決してくれるどころか、思惑に反して勝手に暴れだし、思いがけない新たな問題を引き起こしてしまうのが常である。【８】それが、ギャグのメインになってはいるが、そこにはただ笑ってはすまされない問題がある。
　そもそも、この漫画には、一定の法則がある。「大変だ！　大変だ！」。【９】現代っ子の代表「のび太」の日常の中で起こる様々な問題が発端となる。彼は問題解決の本質を見極めようとはせず、実に安易に「ドラえもん」のポケットに助けを求める。それにこたえて「ドラえもん」の出してくるおせっかいな道具。【０】それはまるで魔法のような効力を発揮して問題を一気に解決するように思えるのだが、すぐさま勝手に暴れだし、新たな問題に右往左往する結末を繰り返すのである。∵
　現代の日常生活は科学文明を過信するあまり、科学に対する基本的な姿勢を忘れ去ってしまっている。便利という言葉に浮かされて出来合いの科学を大量に買い込んで、これでもかという失敗を繰り返しても、実に平気なのである。それはまるで「のび太」の生活そのものである。
　楽することを求めるあまり、科学のなんたるかを忘れて暮らす現代生活のあり方に浴びせた作者の皮肉な笑い。「ドラえもん」の真の面白さは、我々の日常への痛烈な風刺にあったのだ。
　かつて、藤子（ふじこ）氏は「半世紀も前にはマンガ＝笑いというのが世間一般の常識でした。しかし、ここ四十年ばかりの間に驚異的な変貌を遂げたのです。愛あり、感動あり、希望あり、絶望あり……。かつての笑いは、むしろ片隅で細々と命脈を保っている感じです。」と語ったことがある。彼の言う「かつての笑い」とは漫画が漫画たるゆえんのもの、すなわち「風刺の精神」にほかならない。「ドラえもん」の面白さは、決して笑ってはすまされない現代の深刻な問題への警鐘なのである。
　高度に発達した現代科学を人類に役立てるために、自己を犠牲にしてまで平和に奉仕した「鉄腕アトム」。高度な科学技術をつくりだした人間が、それをどう扱うべきかをテーマにした「鉄人２８号」。そして、科学のしでかす失敗の連続に、走り回るしかないのが、この第三のロボット「ドラえもん」のテーマだとすれば、それに気づかずに笑って読み続ける子供たちの未来に夢は描けないのである。
　卓越した批評精神の漫画家の死を惜しむとともに、藤子（ふじこ）氏が「ドラえもん」に託した現代へのメッセージを、子供たちと一緒に、いま一度しっかりと読み返して欲しい。

We know about one million kinds of animals and can give names to them. But there are more than thirty million species of animals in the world. Every year some of these species disappear and we never see them again. What do you think if one or two disappear?
One answer is this: animals make the world a richer place, a more interesting and a more beautiful place for us to live in. Another answer is: animals help us in many important ways. They give us meat to eat and milk to drink, and we can make things to wear from their coats. Scientists learn a lot from animals and this helps them to understand people. Doctors take things from animals to help sick people. And another answer is: we have to protect animals because we are animals too. Many of these living things are in danger. Without our help, a lot more animals are going to die.
People and animals live in one world. Our land is their land; our trees are their trees; our rivers are their rivers. We protect animals because we want to protect our world. A million years ago there were a lot more species of animals. Of course, some species disappear naturally, but today they are disappearing faster than before.
Animals are in danger from accidents; some animals die even when there are small changes in the weather. But animals are also in danger from our activities. We cannot protect animals -- or people -- from accidents or changing weather, but we can think about our activities and change them. We put new buildings on empty land and do not think about animals. We make new roads; we move rivers; we take away trees.
Sometimes we take animals from their home to a different country. In this new home, other animals do not know the newcomer and are not afraid of it. Black rats went by ship from Asia to the Galapagos Islands and killed many different species of birds. Some of those birds lived only in the Galapagos, but after the rats came they disappeared.
Some people that visit new places take pictures of animals, but other people hunt and kill them. They do not kill the animals for food. They kill them because they like hunting.
In many countries people can also make a lot of money from animals. For example, elephants are killed because people want ivory. Many bigger animals are in danger because their coats are beautiful and some people would like to have them to put in their houses, or to wear.
Pollution of our land, seas, rivers and sky is getting very bad. We are making our world a very dirty place, so many animals cannot live in it. Pollution is bad for all of us. It is killing animals. In the future it is going to kill people too.
More people in bigger cities take more land and make more pollution. So we are taking the homes of animals very fast. Where can they go? They will have no place to go...and the animals will die in the end.
